Timeless Design with a
Personal Touch
Set in the historic District 6 of Cape Town, this project forms part of a broader initiative by the City of Cape Town to revitalize the area. Designed as an addition to the existing CPUT E-Learning building, the steel-framed structure introduces a co-working business space that is accessible directly from the street, fostering community engagement and modern functionality.
Transforming Spaces
The concept revolves around exposing structural elements to symbolize an “honest regeneration” of District 6. The new structure “mutates” from the existing form, separating visually while respecting the site’s historical integrity. This approach ensures that the area’s rich history remains uninterrupted, even as the design seeks to enhance its contemporary relevance.
Architectural intent includes a sawtooth roof aligned diagonally to the original building’s layout, optimizing northern sunlight for sustainability. The overhang created by this orientation provides shading for both the new and existing structures, demonstrating an integration of practicality and design. The mezzanine, supported by the existing building’s inner columns, mirrors the roof’s structural rhythm, reinforcing the cohesive design language.
This addition stands as a testament to thoughtful urban regeneration, blending innovation with respect for the past, while creating a dynamic, functional space for the community.
